Cliff Richard - The Rock 'N' Roll Years 1958 - 1963

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 02:00 PM PDT

Such an unimaginative title for such a imaginative boxful. Across four
discs and 105 songs, Cliff Richard's earliest catalog comes in for
precisely the kind of treatment every rock & roll star should have: an
all-encompassing study of his most important period. Even more
impressively, though the song titles all sound familiar, the performances
rarely are. Thirty-seven tracks are bona fide unreleased (South African 78s
notwithstanding), but several dozen more are culled from scarce EP-only
mixes, rarely resurfacing B-sides, and unusual mixes. One cut, an undubbed
take of "Willie and the Hand Jive," was hitherto available only on a
mid-'80s budget-priced single disc, covering much the same period as this.
It wasn't aimed at collectors, it wasn't heavily advertised, and it
probably didn't sell many copies. Of such things do completists dream, but
when you have a beakful of hen's teeth to sort through, do such things
really matter? Discs one through three are the conventional ones. Running
in strict chronology through Richard's first eight albums, 20-plus EPs, and
23 singles, highlights are sorted, then sorted again. Where a rare version
exists, that's what is offered here, be it an alternate version of "It's
All in the Game," an unreleased rehearsal of "Do You Wanna Dance," or the
original stereo mix for the album take of "Twenty Flight Rock." Disc one is
the hottest. The swagger of "Move It," the dynamics of "Dynamite," all the
things that sent the New Musical Express running home to hide in 1958/1959
(screaming, "must we fling this filth at our pop kids?") are here. From
this side of the ocean, the best-known tracks are the American covers, and
there's a fair swathe of them to be sure. But the killers, the stompers,
the real bees' knees, are the homegrown monsters that simply ripped up the
form book and rewrote rocking basics. Just like the guy who sang them, in
fact. Disc two, covering 1959-1961, keeps up the pace for as long as it
can, but rock & roll itself was starting to flag, and Richard's energy
level flags with it. By disc three, 1962-1963, Richard's post-Beatles role
of mainstream pop balladeer was already in his grasp, and though he could
still kick out the jams when he wanted (a soulful "Blueberry Hill," a
raunchy "Reelin' and Rockin'"), it's the ballads that stick out the most
-- "It's All in the Game" and "I'm Looking Out the Window." And then
there's "The Next Time," stripped down to its unorchestrated basics, and
still one of Richard's most impressive performances. Until you reach disc
four, of course. Subtitled "Rare'n'Rockin' 1958-63," this is the album that
completely rewrites history. It opens with the first recording Richard
(then still laboring under his distinctly nondescript given name of Harry
Webb) ever made: He rips through raucous, raw renderings of "Lawdy Miss
Clawdy" and "Breathless," cuts to a 1958 live show, and hacks through
broadcast tapes and unreleased acetates. And every one is a gem. His Elvis
Presley covers are especially remarkable. America's rock & roll revolution,
of course, was matched blow for blow by skiffle in the U.K. -- even
Richard's Shadows cut their teeth in that movement, as members of Wally
Whyton's Vipers. Where Richard triumphed over the rest of the pack was in
the way he blended the two forms together; where "Rare'n'Rockin'" triumphs
is by revealing just how seamless that blending could be. And "Jailhouse
Rock" and "Heartbreak Hotel" are the apogee of his art. Suddenly it's no
surprise that, for every new British band from the Beatles on down, it was
Richard and the Shadows who pointed the way, not Elvis, Buddy Holly, Eddie
Cochran, or Gene Pitney, and certainly none of the names who sprang up in
Britain in Richard's wake. Richard did more than create a hybrid. He
invented a truly British way of rocking. And from the Beatles to Blur, the
Rolling Stones to the Stone Roses, that method remains fundamental to
British rock.

Red Squares - Red Squares Favoritter

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 05:42 AM PDT

" The streets of London and most of the rest of the Sceptered Isle may have
seemed as though they were paved with gold, at least to outsiders, but by
1964 there were literally thousands of bands competing for the attention of
club owners, record company executives, et al. A number of British bands,
recognizing that there was demand for their sound and a living to be made
outside of England, took the plunge -- the Rokes went off to Italy, the
Liverpool Five headed for Asia and then the United States, and the Red
Squares took off for Denmark. Formed in Boston, England, in 1964, the Red
Squares were almost a retro outfit, emphasizing harmony vocals along the
lines of the early Beach Boys, the Four Seasons, and the Tokens, with
falsetto leads and a strong emphasis on covers of early-'60s material.
Dave "Geordie" Garriock was the lead singer, but lead guitarist Ronnie
Martin also handled harmonies, as did bassist Pete Mason, while Mick
Rothwell (guitar) and Michael "Rik" Maloney (drums) were the non-singing
members of the quintet. Finding the competition in England a little too
steep -- what with better established groups like the Fortunes already
laying claim to the audience for that brand of harmony vocal-based pop/rock
-- the group pulled up stakes and headed for Denmark in early 1966, where
there was a good deal of demand for British bands, and where early-'60s
American sounds weren't considered as out-of-step as they were in England.
They became stars there, hitting number one with their cover of the Four
Seasons' "Sherry" and cutting an entire LP. By the middle of the year,
they'd also begun experimenting with harder sounds in the instrumental
department. Casting an eye back toward London, they generated a single
worthy of the Who in the guise of "You Can Be My Baby" (co-authored by
Ronnie Martin), which sounded as majestically overamplified and punkishly
chaotic as anything coming from Mssrs. Townshend, Entwistle, Daltrey, and
Moon; significantly, and perhaps not coincidentally, the Who (and
particularly Keith Moon) also counted the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean among
their favorite bands, so perhaps this single wasn't as much of a stretch as
it might seem at first glance (or listen). In any case, this one foray into
proto-psychedelic garage punk got the Red Squares a berth on Rhino Records'
Nuggets II in the summer of 2001, and the biggest exposure they ever got in
the United States or anywhere else much farther than the borders of

"This British beat/soul group very poular in Denmark, where they were
based. They formed in Boston, Lincolnshire in June 1964, and quickly scored
a deal playing American bases over in France. In July 1965 Dave Bell
returned to England and was replaced by Mick Rothwell, with Howie Gee also
being recruited as an extra lead singer.
In December 1965 Howie Gee temporarily left the group to join his
girlfriend in Denmark. He found there was a big market for a group like The
Red Squares in Denmark and persuaded the rest of the band to join him.
Within six months they had become a big name and were breaking into Sweden.
At gigs, there was fan hysteria and at one Swedish concert, the crowd
completely wrecked the stage. In March 1966, Andy Bell went back to England
to be a journalist and Howie Gee rejoined as Drummer vocalist. As The Red
Squares were making their first record (Howie played on their two biggest
Danish hits Sherry and People Get Ready) and just before a massive tour of
Sweden, Howie was thrown out of Denmark, because he had no work permit.
Andy Bell was asked to come back for a short while before Mick Malony took
over the position of Drummer. In September 1966, Ronnie Martin left and was
replaced by Stevie McGee. Ronnie sang with the Beatmakers (Danish) for a
short while. Pete Mason also left the group, being replaced by Dennis
Hastings and then Stevie McGee also left, being replaced by Jahn Teigen
(ex-The Enemies). In 1969 December the group split up after a tour of
Isrжl, as they had permit problems and no chance of getting back to
Denmark. In the period of 1966-67 they were amongst the biggest idols on
the Danish Pop Scene. No other group could have the idol worship they
received where ever they went. Geordie was voted number two best in the
world singer and the group were always in the papers and front page news of
magazines. Inspired by American groupps such as The Beach Boys and The Four
Seasons, they also drew inspiration from some the American black groups
that were around at the time, but also wrote their own material. The Red
Squares also inspired many Danish groups including The Fourways, Freedoms,
Burtons and The Money Makers. In 1971 Geordie went to Sweden where he made
four single records and an album in his own name. He came back to Denmark
in 1975 and formed the group Squares. Consisting of Geordie (ld vcls),
Michael Rasmussen (ld gtr, vcls), Helge Solberg (bs, vcls), later replaced
by Chris Poulsen (bs, vcls), Mogens Christensen (gtr vcls), Gert Gunther
(drms, vcls) replaced by Ola Juul and then Paul Callaby (ex-Shu Bi Dua).
Squares broke up in the winter of 1977-78. "

Jerry Raye Featuring Fenwyck - The Many Sides Of

Posted: 16 Apr 2019 04:01 AM PDT

Although pop-psychedelic rockers Fenwyck were based in Southern California,
singer Jerry Raye came from the East Coast; the other members, it may be
assumed, were local musicians. Fenwyck's most famous song, "Mindrocker",
was composed by Keith and Linda Colley, the same songwriters who
composed "One Track Mind" for The Knickerbockers. "Mindrocker", credited
simply to Fenwyck, was release in July of 1967 on the Challenge label as
single #59369. Later that same year, "Mindrocker" was also released on the
much smaller DeVille label as single #206. The DeVille release was credited
to Jerry Raye and Fenwyck.

Potemkine - Foetus 1976 (France, Zeuhl/Jazz Rock/Fusion)

групп The Rolling Stones и Deep Purple.
Mystère / Rictus
Michel, а также Maurice Bataille и Xavier Vidal.
Dominique Dubuisson.

Triton.

Nucleus.
Charles Goubin.
Gilles

[FLAC] PINK FLOYD - BBC Archives 1967-69

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:02 PM PDT

Kinks, Beatles, Cream, Who, dentre muitos outros...

Lou Christie (Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco)
The Gypsy Cried,
Следующим синглом была вещь Two Faces Have I, выпущенная в
How Many Teardrops,

Cliff Richard - 21 Today (1961)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:58 PM PDT

Not many albums are titled after their release date, but October 14, 1961,
was a significant date whichever way you look at it, as Cliff Richard
finally advanced into adulthood. He could drink alcohol. He could vote. He
could drive a car. He could even have sex. And the fact that he was already
the single most popular and successful solo pop star Britain had (or would)
ever produced did not diminish the significance of the event. His fifth
album even opens with a distinctly stylized Shadows version of "Happy
Birthday To You," over which Cliff, the band and sundry friends revel in
his new found freedom... "we should get the young ladies a drink," says
someone and, perhaps, we should be grateful that the track fades out
quickly after.
In fact, it would not necessarily be a bad thing if the entire album
followed suit. While by no means the nadir of Cliff's recording career, 21
Today is very much a portrait of the artist on auto-pilot, a succession of
pleasant mid-tempo ballads, with Shadows-lite backing, soaring strings
a-go-go and - the curse of British MOR later in the decade - the utterly
wholesome oohs, aahs and echoes of an army of clean-living backing youths.
A couple of tracks buck the trend - "Without You" and "Tough Enough" are
gritty Shadows-led stompers, while Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch's "Y'Arriva"
at least packs an intriguingly mock-Spanish backing, to match vocal
stylings lifted straight from an old Speedy Gonzales cartoon. There is also
a bizarre version of "Tea For Two," Cliff giving it his best well-mannered
showband vocal, while the Shadows noodle away in best smokey jazzclub style.

The Tokens - The Lion sleeps Tonight (1961) EP

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:47 PM PDT

The Tokens were formed in 1955 by Hank Medress. The original band included
Neil Sedaka, but it was not until Medress reassembled the group in 1960,
with brothers Phil and Mitch Margo and lead vocalist Jay Siegel, that they
really hit the big time. By 1967 they had scored nine charting records
(including the number one smash hit 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'), as well as
having written, produced, and sung literally hundreds of recordings. The
group's versatility reached its apex when they signed with Warner Bros
where they recorded two albums 'It's A Happening World' and 'Intercourse'.
But with no chart action from the group in 1968, Warner Bros. rejected the
second album, which The Tokens then released independently.

Del Shannon - Runaway With Del Shannon (1961)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 01:11 PM PDT

Runaway with Del Shannon is the 1961 debut album by American rock 'n' roll
singer-songwriter Del Shannon. It was released shortly after and contains
Shannon's best-known hit, "Runaway". It is regarded by critics as helping
bridge the period between early rock and the British Invasion.

The Beatles with Tony Sheridan - BEATLES BOP : Hamburg Days

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 11:14 AM PDT

No matter what everyone once thought of these recordings, they hold more
value and mystery now than they ever could have when they were originally
issued. Part of it is the mythology of the Beatles, but the rest is in the
raw, live, sexual energy that these recordings themselves project. It's
also an indisputable fact that the Beatles never, ever rocked harder than
on these sessions with Tony Sheridan and then-drummer Pete Best from
1961-1964. While Tony Sheridan may never have been the singer either Paul
McCartney or John Lennon was, he was a solid rock & roll singer, and the
Beatles had never thought much about playing pop music at point -- as these
recordings truly attest. The wildness in all six versions of "My Bonnie"
(three mono, three stereo), "Sweet Georgia Brown," "The Saints," "Take Some
Insurance out on Me Baby," "Nobody's Child," "Ain't She Sweet," and "Cryin"
for a Shadow," in all their mono, stereo, and medley versions, tell a story
of risk, innocence, and raw nerve on the part of the Beatles, and until
this Bear Family edition of the complete German studio sessions, it had
never been told before. The package contains two CDs, 38 selections, and
pristine sound. There is also a booklet with every single session note
obtainable as well as many photographs and even a reproduction of the
contract between the Beatles and Bert Kamephert as administered by the late
Brian Epstein. This is an amazing document, one that opens another
dimension unto the world that the Beatles entered and then changed.

VA - A Time To Remember 1960

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 05:15 AM PDT

1960: 20 Original Chart Hits' songs are an appealing mix of lightweight
rockers, pop crooners, orchestral themes, and novelties that give a good
feel for the year's music. A Time to Remember is a British label, so the
tracks are derived from that country's charts, making it slightly different
than a collection from the U.S. charts. Artists like the great Johnny Kidd
& the Pirates and Peter Sellers wouldn't be included on the latter, for
sure. There are many classic tracks to be found here, like Eddie
Cochran's "Three Steps to Heaven," Fats Domino's "Walkin' to New Orleans,"
the Shadows' "Apache," and Rolf Harris' "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport," along
with some songs that are less well-known but still great, like Gene
Vincent's "Pistol Packin' Mama," Marv Johnson's "You've Got What It Takes,"
and Johnny & the Hurricanes' "Beatnik Fly." There are relatively few weak
tracks, and the collection, while not essential, is a fun and frothy listen
bathed in nostalgia.

Bo Diddley - Have A Guitar, Will Travel (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:32 AM PDT

Amazingly, Bo Diddley's third album — containing classics such as "Cops and
Robbers," "Run Diddley Daddy," and "Mona (I Need You Baby)" — has only been
reissued on vinyl, and even that's out of print. More than one British
Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll
from the songs on this record (the Stones cut "Cops and Robbers" at their
earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of "Mona,"
though the most interesting British version of the latter was done by an
all-girl band with an attitude called the Liverbirds).
This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley's first two albums (the
guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range), and has
more than enough to recommend it to collectors and fans. This is the album
that began the funny cover photos on Diddley's records.

Bobby Darin - This is Darin (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:26 AM PDT

There's been considerable discussion about whether Bobby Darin should be
classified as a rock & roll singer, a Vegas hipster cat, an interpreter of
popular standards, or even a folk-rocker. He was all of these and none of
these. Throughout his career he made a point of not becoming committed to
any one style at the exclusion of others; at the height of his nightclub
fame he incorporated a folk set into his act. When it appeared he could
have gone on indefinitely as a sort of junior version of Frank Sinatra, he
would periodically record pop/rock and folk-rock singles whose principal
appeal lay outside of the adult pop market. At one point he started calling
himself Bob Darin and recorded songs with vague anti-establishment
overtones that could be said to be biting the largely bourgeois hands that
fed his highest-paying gigs. It may be most accurate to say that Darin was,
above all, a singer who wanted to do a lot of things, rather than make his
mark as a particular stylist. That may have cost him some points as far as
making it to the very top of certain genres, but it also makes his work
more versatile than almost any other vocalist of his era.
When Darin had his first hits in the late '50s, he was a teen idol of
sorts, albeit a teen idol with much more talent and mature command than the
typical singer in that style. The novelty-tinged "Splish Splash" was his
breakthrough smash, followed by "Queen of the Hop" and the ballad "Dream
Lover." There was a slight R&B feel to Darin's delivery that may well have
influenced R&B-pop/rock singers such as Dion, though it would be an
exaggeration to call Darin a blue-eyed soul man. In late 1959, he found a
new direction when the swinging "Mack the Knife," a tune from
Brecht-Weill's musicalThreepenny Opera, made number one. The song came from
an album of pop standards, heralding his move toward light big-band jazz,
which was consolidated by the Top Ten success of "Beyond the Sea" in 1960.
In the early '60s, Darin had mostly abandoned rock for the adult pop
market, becoming a huge success on the Vegas-nightclub circuit, and moving
into the all-around entertainer mode with starring roles in movies
(including one as a non-singing jazz musician in John Cassavetes' Too Young
Blues). He also continued to score regular hits with the likes of "You Must
Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "Things," and "Lazy River." To keep people
guessing, there was also a hit cover of "What'd I Say" and some country
tunes (one of which, "You're the Reason I'm Living," made it to number
three on the pop charts). Around 1963, he put a folk section into his
nightclub act that employed guitarist Roger McGuinn, who was then a couple
of years away from fame as the leader of the Byrds.
Darin didn't make the expected retreat into Rat Pack land when his records
stopped making the upper reaches of the charts in the mid-'60s. In 1965,
there was a rather nice self-penned jangly folk-rocker, "When I Get Home,"
that become a British hit for the Searchers. Another 1965 flop, "We Didn't
Ask to Be Brought Here," was an unexpected antiwar tune. When he made his
return to the Top Ten in late 1966, it was with a cover of a gentle Tim
Hardin folk-rock song, "If I Were a Carpenter." His final Top 40 hit the
following year, "Lovin' You," opted for material by another major folk-rock
composer, John Sebastian.
Darin may indeed have been far hipper and more politically aware than the
average nightclub act, covering tunes by Dylan and the Rolling Stones,
participating in a 1965 civil rights march to Alabama, and penning some
Dylan-influenced songs of his own in the late '60s. It doesn't seem
accurate to say that this was the true Bobby Darin, shedding his show biz
skin for something that came to him more naturally; in 1967, the same year
he covered Jagger-Richards' "Back Street Girl," he also recorded material
for an album titled Bobby Darin Sings Doctor Dolittle. By the early '70s he
was working Vegas and similar joints again, exchanging his blue jeans for a
tuxedo, and hosting a TV variety series. In a much odder turn of events,
began recording for Motown, though these efforts met little success.
Another Song on My Mind: The Motown Years Afflicted with a rheumatic heart,
Darin was always aware that his time might be limited, and he died near the
end of 1973 during open-heart surgery. He left behind a considerable
quantity (and diversity) of recorded work, and underwent a critical
reevaluation of sorts, especially among rock critics, which might have
aided his election to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. A 1996 four-CD
box set, divided into thematic discs, attempted to put his wide-ranging
efforts into perspective. In 2004, actor Kevin Spacey starred as Bobby
Darin in the feature film biography Beyond the Sea. Spacey also directed
and sang Darin's songs for the film, which were released as the film's
soundtrack. Beyond the Sea may have been the splashiest celebration of
Darin's legacy, but the singer never receded from the pop culture
spotlight, as his music continued to appear in films and see reissues,
including the 2016 compilation Another Song on My Mind, which shined a
spotlight on his underappreciated Motown work from the early '70s.

Johnny And The Hurricanes - Stormsville (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:11 AM PDT

One of the most distinctive instrumental groups of the '50s and '60s,
Johnny & the Hurricanes produced the Top Ten hit "Red River Rock" and
scored several other instrumental hits that mixed rock & roll with
traditional melodies. Originally known as the Orbits, the group formed in
Toledo, OH, in 1958 and was led by saxophonist Johnny Paris; other members
included organist Paul Tesluk, guitarist Dave Yorko, bassist Lionel "Butch"
Mattice, and drummer Tony Kaye. After a stint recording with rockabilly
singer Mack Vickery, the group traveled to Detroit, hoping to become a
backing band for up-and-coming singers. However, a pair of music promoters,
Harry Balk and Irving Michanik, signed them as a group on their own, and
they recorded their first single, "Crossfire," for the Twirl label in
1959. "Crossfire" went to number 23 and the group moved to the Warwick
imprint for "Red River Rock," a rock & roll instrumental of the
standard "Red River Valley" that peaked at number five. The Hurricanes
responded to their success with more of the same, delivering "Reveille
Rock," "Rockin' Goose," "Revival," and "Beatnik Fly" over the next year,
touring extensively all the while. Eventually the pace -- and lack of
further hit singles -- caught up with the group, and Johnny & the
Hurricanes disbanded in 1965. Paris moved to Hamburg, started his own
label, Atila, and in 1970 formed a new Hurricanes lineup that toured until
November 2005, two weeks before Paris took ill and was hospitalized. He
died on May 1, 2006, due to pneumonia and septic blood after a splenectomy.

The Nightcaps - Wine, Wine, Wine (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 04:04 AM PDT

The Nightcaps were one of those great overlooked bands of the late '50s and
early '60s. By rights, they deserved the kind of recognition accorded
outfits like their Texas compatriots the Bobby Fuller Four, or even Buddy
Holly, but somehow they never made it to a national following. Lead singer
Billy Joe Shine, rhythm guitarist Gene Haufler, lead guitarist David
Swartz, bassist Mario Daboub, and drummer Jack Allday were all high school
students in Dallas who started playing record hops and school dances in
1958, and also began writing songs as well. It turned out that they were
good in both departments and got a lot of gigs locally. They were also
noticed by a local entrepreneur named Tom Brown, who tried and failed to
get them signed to RCA Victor and then put the Nightcaps out on his own
local Vandan label. The Nightcaps' debut single, "Wine Wine Wine"
b/w "Nightcap Rock", became a hit in Dallas and was heard enough in other
parts of the country to get the band offers from locales they'd never
played or even visited. When their second single, "Thunderbird" b/w "Ole
Jose," released in 1960, was also a hit in Dallas, the group was prevailed
upon to record a complete LP, Wine, Wine, Wine.
The Wine, Wine, Wine album was one of the best rock & roll LPs of its era,
a solid mix of rockabilly, blues ("I Got My Mojo Working," "Sweet Little
Angel," "Mojo Man"), and instrumental rock that still sounds good more than
40 years later. Apart from the excellence of Shine's singing and the band's
musicianship -- David Swartz was a first-rate blues player, his virtuosity
and feeling for the music showcased on the instrumental "Tough That's All"
-- was the one major addition to their lineup, jazz saxman John Hardee, who
had returned to his native Texas by then and was teaching at around the
time that the Nightcaps needed a reed man. Their album never got anywhere
near charting, but it was good enough to be pirated around the country and
was a sufficiently impressive showcase for the Nightcaps that they were
soon getting bookings across the south. The British Invasion should have
doomed them, but it proved little more than a slight interruption of
momentum and broke their string of steady local radio play for a short time
-- the Nightcaps proved enough of a going enterprise to last right through
the 1960s, past the British Invasion and through numerous lineup changes.
At one point, Gary Mears of the Dallas-based Original Casuals passed
through the ranks of the group.

The Blue Diamonds - Ramona (1960) EP

Brothers Riem de Wolff (born April 15, 1943, died September 12, 2017) and
Ruud de Wolff (born May 12, 1941, died December 18, 2000) founded the group
shortly after immigrating to the Netherlands in 1949 from Batavia (now
Jakarta), Indonesia.
Although their last hit was in 1971, they continued to perform together up
until Ruud died. Riem continues to perform as solo artist with a supporting
band, and with his son Steffen, as a duo called The New Diamonds.

Gary Stites - Lonely For You (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:32 AM PDT

Gary Stites was a pop idol in the ’50s but is best known as the first
manager of the Birdwatchers. He started the Living Legend and Legend
labels, the “Legend” refering to himself, naturally!
The Birdwatchers at this point were Dave Chiodo guitar, Bobby Puccetti
keys, Jim Tolliver bass, and Eddie Martinez drums and were based near Ft.
Lauderdale. They had already released three 45s on the Tara label, the
second and third of which list Stites as producer.
For some reason Gary decided to try his hand at singing again, with the
Birdwatchers backing him up. “Real Appeal” is good uptempo ’50s-ish rock,
with an uncredited girl chorus. The flip, “While I’m Gone” is kind of a
poor man’s Roy Orbison. This 45 did better than any of the early
Birdwatchers records, peaking at #22 on WQAM in August ’65.
In early ’66 the Birdwatchers dramatically changed their lineup and
relocated to Miami. Chiodo and Tolliver left, to be replaced by Joey Murcia
on guitar and Jerry Schils (formerly of the Canadian Legends) on bass.
Sammy Hall, vocalist with the Mor-Loks, who were also managed by Stites
early on, completed this second phase of the Birdwatchers. This lineup went
on to some national success with “Girl I’ve Got News For You” and “I’m
Gonna Love You Anyway”.
A year later, Tommy Strand & the Upper Hand remade “Real Appeal” for their
45 on Living Legend. Stites also reused the flip, “While I’m Gone” for the
b-side of a 45 by the Legendary Street Singers.

The Ventures - Walk Don't Run (1960)

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 03:25 AM PDT

This debut album by the Ventures is surprisingly good, considering that it
was recorded in a huge rush during an era when all concerned couldn't help
but know that rock & roll albums (apart from those by Elvis Presley)
generally didn't sell very well; indeed, the fact that this is so good
speaks volumes about the class and talent of the group at this early point
in their history. With a sudden and totally unexpected number two national
hit in "Walk, Don't Run" and a burgeoning demand for live performances, the
quartet went in and recorded the best 11 tracks they knew to get a long
player together, all done in such a hurry that the members themselves
couldn't stay around long enough to be photographed for the cover (those
are stand-ins). The result is surprisingly sophisticated in its use of
stereo (then still relatively unusual in rock & roll, stereo LPs only
debuted three years earlier and were largely confined to classical
recordings), dividing the sound of the band quite neatly on two sides, thus
giving LP purchasers a treat that owners of the single "Walk, Don't Run"
would miss -- not only the sound separation that was so prized by
audiophiles of the era, but crisp presentation of each instrument, dividing
the two guitars very neatly. Thus, the casual listener could play with the
speaker settings and balances, and the serious fans could get in close on
the actual playing. The material is a mix of originals and hits drawn from
every category, including earlier rock & roll instrumentals ("Raunchy"),
R&B "Night Train," and even film music ("My Own True Love [Tara's Theme]")
-- one can just make out the familiar Max Steiner Gone with the Wind motif
on the latter, and it is a fairly inventive approach to an old musical
chestnut, rebuilding it from the ground up. The material all has a lean
jauntiness, most unexpectedly "Night Train," which sounds closer in spirit
to Chet Atkins than to Buddy Morrow or King Curtis. The originals were no
filler, either, "The McCoy" being a hot piece of surf guitar showcasing all
